I was born
in Nova Scotia, Canada in 1956. My mother, Audrey Hudson, was also an
artist, and I am sure she inherited this from her own grandfather who,
in his day, was a professional artist and entrepreneur. Among other things
he was responsible for the restoration of paintings in the collection
at Burghley House, one of the great Elizabethan manor houses built in
England in 1587. His very own art palette hangs proudly on the door to
my studio.
I've loved
art from an early age and took numerous lessons in drawing; enjoying it
enough to pursue other creative interests that eventually lead to a diploma
in fashion design from St. Lawrence College in 1978. After college, various
art classes fed my desire to paint.
I'm interested
in traditional & contemporary art. I especially love the chance to see
major works "up close and personal" and, lucky for me, I have had the
opportunity to travel. This has enabled me to indulge my passion in some
of the world's great art museums.
I have studied
painting under some excellent artists. One of my dreams was realized in
2001 when we lived in Australia, I got to meet and paint with one of my
favourites: Robert Wade. I was delighted to find him approachable, charming,
and full of the spirit of life… just like his paintings!
For the
most part, my work is about the places and people that I find interesting.
I think I am drawn to subjects that echo a life force in one way or another.
I love watching the effects of light, and trying to incorporate that into
my painting. I like watercolour and oils because they are different mediums,
and switching between them keeps me hopping…just the challenge I like
when painting.
I have been
happily married to my husband David for 27 years, and I am the mother
of three beautiful daughters, Holly, Rachel & Jane.
